The History of Freightliner®

The company began under the name of Consolidated Freightways in the 1930s. They were based in the Pacific Northwest and the company decided to build a truck able to conquer the challenging mountain passes in the area. Their first models were successful and only intended for company use. But they caught the eye of others and the company sold their first model to an outside company in 1949. This truck is so iconic that it's a part of the Smithsonian collection.

In 1974, the company became a freestanding manufacturer and distributor. In 1981, they sold the manufacturing part of the business and became known as Freightliner. Over the years, the company focused on expanding the types of products and innovating their technology. There are even specialty vehicles available, such as buses and tank trucks.
